Our Physical Therapy Department also offers an aquatic therapy program that physicians and patients can utilize for a wide range of diagnosis. The aquatic therapy is aimed at each patient’s individual needs. Some benefits and advantages of pool therapy: water is a gentle way to exercise joints and muscles, water aides in relaxing joints and muscles without undue stress; the buoyancy of water permits active movement and strengthens the arms and legs. It also helps to stabilize and strengthen without fear of gravity affecting unstable bones. Water exercise can also improve breathing.Aquatherapy utilizes a warm water pool for physical therapy treatment. Individual aquatherapy rehabilitation exercises are designed to improve flexibility, normalize movement, and promote function. This program also integrates physical therapy into the treatment plan in order to maximize patient benefit.
A patient, where always assisted by a therapist, would participate in a regimen of exercises using floating weights or other devices. Physical therapy completed in water has been proven to ease some of the pain and stress on the back and joints associated with the exercises needed to recover from an orthopaedic injury or illness. It can also be fun.
