Osteoporosis is a silent disease that
gradually weakens bones causing
them to become brittle and prone to
fractures. It is called the silent disease
because many signs are not noticeable.
Over time however a few signs can include:
• Loss of height
• Back pain
• Hunched posture
• Hip, wrist or spine fractures
Osteoporosis and its associated fractures of the hip, spine and wrist can rob you of your mobility and independence.
What puts you at risk?
• Family history of osteoporosis
• Caucasian or Asian
• Female
• Current tobacco smoking
• Below normal body weight (<127 pounds)
• Deficiency of estrogen (menopause before age 45, bilateral ovariectomy,
premenopausal amonorrhea for over 1 year)
• Lifelong low intake of calcium
• Excessive consumption of alcohol
• Inadequate physical activity
• Fraility of poor overall physical condition
• Medications (steroids, coumadin, antiepileptics, etc.)
• Rheumatoid arthritis
Is there a test?
Luckily, today osteoporosis is preventable and treatable, but first it must be diagnosed. A safe, simple and painless bone density exam called a DEXA scan can be performed. This test is a full body scan that involves no injections and takes only a few minutes to complete. This test determines the current status of your bones and your risk of developing osteoporosis.
